Native plants of Brantford and Brant County

This is a growing, non-exhaustive list of plants native to Brantford and Brant County, Ontario, with a focus on species considered common in ecodistrict 7E-2, part of Ontario’s broader Carolinian Zone. It is based on regional vascular plant records by Michael J. Oldham and VASCAN.

Over time, I plan to photograph and document many of these plants in my own garden: how they grow and spread through the seasons, their preferred conditions, colours and characteristics, the plant communities they belong to, and the insects, birds, and wildlife they may support.

These plants can offer foundations for gardens in Brant — rooted in place, and shaped around biodiversity, beauty, and care.
